DrakCon'07

8th and 9th September 2007

Sat. 1.00pm - 11.00pm, Sun. 9.00am - 8.00pm

Albyn School, Queens Road, Aberdeen

Adults £5 weekend, £3 day / Under 18's, Students Free

(DrakCon'07 is supported by Aberdeen City Council's Youth Activity Small Grant budget)

Due to an extension being built at Albyn School that venue was unavailable and we were unable to find an alternative at our normal time of year. For this year DrakCon is therefore taking place in September.
Due to problems beyond our control we are unable to use the hall on Saturday morning and the opening time will now be 1 pm.
The good news is that thanks to the support of Aberdeen City Council's Youth Activity Small Grant we have been able to make the cost of entry to DrakCon the lowest it has been for many years and indeed free for under 18's, etc.
Some games such as Greyhawk and Arcanis will have a small charge per game.
Anyone wishing to run other events at DrakCon should contact us ASAP.

The History of DrakCon

In 1986 a group in London, led by Liz Holiday, decided that there should be a response by members of the role playing hobby to the already successful efforts of Band Aid and Live Aid to raise funds for relief of the dreadful situation in Africa. Thus was born Dragon Aid.
As well as organising their own fundraiser - a successful sponsored attempt to set the world record for continuous playing of AD&D - they put out a fanzine calling on other gamers to join in with their own events. On holiday I picked up a copy of this, came home, asked the staff behind the counter of the local games shop what they thought. A few hours later I was being interviewed by local newspapers and radio. Letters were sent to games companies, paper manufacturers, soft drinks firms, etc. and then a local postal strike started!
Three weeks later, we had a hall (at Aberdeen University, normally the scene of graduation ceremonies and the like), reams of high quality glossy paper, clingfilm, a promise of trophies and several pounds of paté. With only two days to the event I was also getting worried. At this point the manager of the local ODEON came to the rescue with the use of a card for a local wholesaler and a sale or return order of coke, etc. on our behalf. A carrier delivered a box of prizes from Games Workshop and we were on our way.
That first event was in two parts, we started with a 36 hour sponsored marathon followed by a nights rest. The next day we re-opened for a weekend of gaming including a three round AD&D tournament. Despite the numbers attending being small we still raised £600.
Eight months or so later, I started getting asked when I was going to hold another. The organisers of the original Dragon Aid event had decided that it was a one off and so, although we kept Dragon Aid, Aberdeen alive as an organisation, we had to come up with a new title for the event. After various suggestions and dreadfull puns we settled on DrakCon - to include Fantasy (Dragon!), Horror (DRACula!) and SF (the Drak from Enemy Mine). (This should give an idea of how bad the rejected puns must have been.) We found what was to become our regular venue, more people came and so it became an annual event.
Over the last twenty years Dragon Aid, Aberdeen has raised about £35000 for famine relief. At the same time DrakCon has built a reputation as one of the most friendly and fun events of its type. Although the common misconception that Aberdeen is somewhere near the Artic circle amongst those living to the south has limited the numbers travelling, those who have done so have kept coming back year after year.

Aberdeen

The city of Aberdeen is situated in the Northeast of Scotland. With its range of parks and gardens it is a multiple past winner of "Britain in Bloom". Aberdeen is worth visiting not only for itself but also for its surroundings. It makes an excellent centre for touring the Northeast including Royal Deeside. The Northeast of Scotland is rich in history and prehistory - stone circles, carved standing stones, hill forts, underground chambers and castles (not as large perhaps as in Wales, but then we did not let Edward stay to finish his plans).
Archaeolink near Aberdeen provides an excellent introduction to the prehistory of the area. It has reconstructions of an Iron Age farm, Stone Age camp, Roman camp, a henge and a stone circle as well as the remains of an actual hillfort.
The area is also rich in distilleries, many open to the public. All this is set in some wonderful scenery.
Why not make DrakCon part of a longer holiday in the area?

Sandy Douglas

I am a teacher of maths at Portlethen Academy (just south of Aberdeen). I am married with two children, Adam (18) and Hazel (16), who have been playing AD&D for several years. I have been playing card and board games for as long as I can remember (I was encouraged to play various forms of card patience to help learn numbers, etc.!). I discovered wargames when I started secondary school and have been playing RPG's (mainly AD&D) for over 20 years. In between the family, schoolwork, evening classes and gaming, I also do choral singing and have a large SF collection.
